Washington Oaks State Park, A Little Paradise I Almost Missed

Our beautiful, terrifying planet is not without its juxtapositions. Some of the most enchanting places on Earth also harbor some of the most daunting locals. In Florida, hurricanes sometimes visit in the late Spring and early Fall, sweeping their massive hands across land and sea as if to smooth out the rough spots. The saving grace are the hidden gems scattered across the state like jewels waiting to be found. Some of the hidden treasures are not-so-hidden, such as the Everglades National Park or Sanibel Island on the state's southwest coast. Others often remain hidden, even to this day.

This beautiful, quiet location reminds me how precious moments of pure tranquility really are. It was humid and the critters were out trying to stay cool. With a lush location and only a few visitors, it was the perfect midweek excursion.

We entered into the forest's welcoming gate as we headed to the Historic Rose Garden. There was something magical about the darkness looming in the wooded area, with a base of brightly blooming flowers set out like a welcome mat.

What a royal entry to the rose gardens at Washington Oaks State Park! It nearly felt like the perfect setting for a stately afternoon tea in a storybook setting.

We found yet another beautiful fountain which was larger than the gazebo fountain. The water surrounding it was filled with life, including a snake quietly napping on the pond moss (not seen in this image.)

An interesting view from the West boundary along the Matanzas River Walkway showing some remnants of a previous hurricane. This is a pretty normal sight in Florida. There are times when an entire forest remains bent for years after a strong storm moves through.

Gems, jewels, a brightly-colored seashell, a pearl in the heart of a clam - all of them require a certain amount of work to obtain. A sharp eye, persistence, and the willingness to suffer a little is where the rewards are found. It's the same with capturing a good photo, because it must tell a story. The images must speak for themselves, and always with a voice louder than words. The gems and pearls tucked away into the limestone state are not always easy to locate, but it's a lot like life. Our seasons of learning and growing often hurt, but when we look back, we see it as a beautiful, irreplaceable treasure, worth all the effort.
